A brief overview of TPLO

Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy is one of the most popular orthopedic
surgeries that is performed on dogs who have torn their cranial cruciate ligament. When your dogs stands the knee is always bent and this means that the ACL inside the knee joint is always load bearing, because of this it makes this ligament the most often injuried. When the ACL tears it causes the femur to slide or rub on the back of the tibia which in turn causes pain and inflammation. The concept of the TPLO is to change the dynamic of the dogs knee so that the torn ligament becomes irrelevant to the stability of the knee itself.
Once the bone is cut and rotated the top of the tibia, where the femur and tibia come together, well, they can no longer slide backwards, thus the knee is stabilized. it elimates the need for the ACL ligament and the joint is stabilized.
